Bf 109G-2/R3

Hello all,

Jochen Prien's Book "Messerschmitt Bf 109 F, G, and K Series: An Illustrated Study" (Schiffer Publishing, 1995) says that some of the Bf 109G-2's within the WNr. 14501-14850 production block were designated Bf 109G-2/R3. What's that supposed to mean?

Hi!

an Me109 G2/R3 is a reconnaissance aircraft mounts for one drop tank under each wing, and an RB camera in the fuselage - all made at factory level.

which is not to be confused with an Me109 G2/RIII...which is a standard
Me109 G2 with a drop tank on the belly - done in the field (field modified kit).

Prien's book only lists two factory designations (Rustzustande) for the G-2 version: G-2/R1, with the additional landing leg and drop tanks; and G-2/R2 with GM-1 and cameras.
