Identification of Fighter & Destroyer Groups

On 13 August 1943, the U.S. Ninth Air Force, from bases in North Africa, attacked the Wiener Neustadt Aircraft Works. To defend against this new threat from the south, Göring hurriedly transferred two Jagdgruppen (Fighter Groups) and one Zerstörergruppe (Twin-engine Fighter Group) to the south of the Reich (I believe I found this information in one of Galland's or Göring's interrogation reports). I am wondering if anyone can tell me exactly which three groups were transferred to the south of the Reich and when.

Identification of Fighter & Destroyer Groups

Hello Barry

A quick glance through The Luftwaffe Over Germany by Caldwell and Muller reveals mention of III./JG 3, I./JG 27 and I./KG 51 being based in the south in time to oppose the raids on Wiener Neustadt and Augsburg on 1 October 1943. Perhaps these are the units you are interested in? I hope this might help somewhat.

Horrido!

Hi Barry,

II./J.G. 51 was transferred from the Mediterranean to Munich on 17 August 1943. I./J.G. 27 also transferred to Austria on 14 August 1943.

Cheers,
Andrew A.
