Bf 109E and Fi 156 prangs

I have a couple of questions on planes that came to grief while landing:

The Aircam book "Luftwaffe Colour Schemes and markings 1935-45 has a picture of a nosed over Bf 109E white 3. It belonged to JG 1 and some old notes I have list the pilot as Fw Hans Schubert and the wreck happened in May 1941. Does anyone know what happened to the pilot or the plane? I think there were some more pictures of this plane and pilot in a old 1970s issue of Air Classics magazine.

The second picture is that of a FI 156 in the book "Hitler's Bandit Hunters" it is dated Februrary 1944 and is near kovel it shows a bent up FI 156 KH+??. Anyone know what happened to the plane?

Thanks in advance.

Hello James,

Are you talking about that machine? http://www.asisbiz.com/il2/Bf-109E/JG1.3.html
If yes there is a problem since 3./JG1 didn't exist in May 1941. (Since Schubert flew in 3./JG1 with yellow numbers ...)
And was re-created not before 1942 in De Kooy from Erg.Gr./JG52.

This plane is given to another pilot in 3./JG1, too. But same problem with the date/unit.

One point can be considered for sure is that machine (Full cap cover on spinner but ROUNDED not pointed, "E-4" style canopy but without head armoured plate and full yellow nose) is typical of Erg machines during this period (see ErG.JG53 too ...)

For me too the identification of that machine isn't that sure ...

NOTE: And answering to your question a risky business ... it seems! :)

Regards, Franck.

Franck, did you also notice from the crash pictures that only one upper wing tip was painted yellow?

Yes that does look like the plane. It seems someone took a number of pictures of this "pilots monument".
