Attack on Gadurra at the end of June 1941?
At the end of June 1941 Gadurrà, which was the base for crews 281ª Sq. AS, was bombed by British planes. One of the bombs hit the SM.79 torpedo. Its detonation launched the explosion, that caused the chain detonation in three planes.
Who caused this destruction? Malta or carrier's bombers? mw |
Re: Attack on Gadurra at the end of June 1941?
From my notes based upon the records of Gadurrà airport I see only three bombardments in june 1941. The only one with aircraft losses happened in the late hours of 9 june: 2 S.79 of 281 Sq. burned out and their torpedoes exploded (they were the alarm section), plus one S.79 of the 279 Sq destroyed (this aircraft was waiting for repairs at the moment of the attack); 2 other S.79 of the 281 Sq damaged, two Ju.52 destroyed and one damaged. Four germans killed and four other germans injured.
The italians estimated that the attack was made by 8-10 Wellingtons. Gianandrea |

Thanks
it means it could be Wellington based on Malta (less) or done from Egipt (more probably) or Middle East like 37. or/and 70. Squadron RAF with them (?) mw |
