Luftwaffe and Allied Air Forces Discussion Forum - Küsten Flieger Gruppe 606

1. I am still pursuing my query (August 2010) re the destruction of a German a/c on 28 May 1941.

2. I have turned my attention to losses on 29 May 1941.

The Luftwaffe QM returns show that Küsten Flieger Gruppe 606 reported the loss of three Ju 88A-5 on 29 May 1941: Each is recorded as: Ort, '(Kanal)'; and Ursache, ‘unbekannte’ (The entries are on Imperial War Museum Luftwaffe losses document 05 pages 4 & 5 of 355).

4. The aircraft recorded as lost on 29 May 1941 are:

a. Ju 88 A5 7T+MH Wnr 8240

Now known to have crashed at Wellow Down IoW with no survivors; buried Cannock Chase.

This aircraft is discounted from my research.

b. Ju 88 A5 7T+JH Wnr 8236

Four crew are listed as missing with one dead. This suggests that there was at least some record as to where the aircraft crashed, but where?

This aircraft is probably not relevant to my research but to eliminate it I would like to ascertain details of its crash.

c. Ju 88 A5 4T+KK Wnr 5248
All four crew members listed as missing with no subsequent amendment, viz;

F Ltn Dutz Hans
Bf Uffz Möller Otto
Bm Uffz v. Hahl Hans
Bs Einsiedel Eugen

I have not found any of these men on the Volksbund.de gräbersuche website.

My working hypothesis is that 4T+KK Wnr 5248 is the most likely candidate for my research.

There seems to be an anomaly with 4T+KK, because the prefix 4T was apparently borne by Wekusta 51 and the suffix should be .H for this unit. Compared to the other two losses that night I note also that Wnr 5248 was an elderly airframe so I am wondering whether:

• 4T is an error for 7T;
• Wnr 5248 was on detachment to Kü.Fl.G 606 for met. data recording purposes – presumably such a/c had special rôle equipment;
• Wnr 5248 had been retired to normal operational duties but had retained its 4T identity;
• there is no significance at all.

5. I seek your advice, please, as to the sources of information that I could tap to find out more.

I would like to know:

• the mission objectives of Ju 88 A5 7T+JH Wnr 8236 and Ju 88 A5 4T+KK Wnr 5248 on 28/29 May 1941;
• Do records for Kü. Fl. G 606 survive? Are they in published form? (If the records are only available in original form in Germany then I expect to have to employ a researcher to search the archives).
• Are there any books I could read on to broaden my knowledge of the type of operations carried out by Kü.Fl.G. 606?

6. Any advice will be gratefully received.
