Lt Hans Schäfer

Hello,
For school lesson material I am looking for information on Lt. Hans Schäfer, who claims to have shot down the Lancaster LM508 above Werkendam, the Netherlands. Hope to find out some more about him and also to be able to find a picture.

A date would help your query

Hi there Corine,

You probably refer to this pilot, Oblt. Hans Schäfer, from 7./NJG 2. You have a thread about him in this forum here:

As for a picture, here you go:

Corinne,

For LM508, SR-P, 101Sqdn RAF, lost 21-Jun-1944 here are the détails:

http://www.lostaircraft.com/database...wentry&e=9180#

According to the thread given by Marc, Schäfer - if that Schäfer - didn't claim any Lancaster that night ... But the mission starting the day and ending the following day ...

Regards, Franck.

Correction: The mission started on 21/06 at 23:17. Effectively LM508 was lost on 22/06. Don't understand why lostaircraft.com retained 21/06 for the lost date.

Re: Lt Hans Schäfer

...and the Fw Hans Schäfer photo came from Alfred Price I believe & cannot be the Lt Hans Schäfer from NJG 2!

Re: Lt Hans Schäfer

Chris is right.
The photo is wrong for the Lancaster story. It's not the Schaefer from NJG2.

For Hans Schaefer from JG3 ---> http://www.luftwaffe.cz/schafer.html

Re: Lt Hans Schäfer

Details from Schäfer's flying logbook (Flugbuch) and book of achievements (Leistungsbuch):

Flight Nr: 300
Pilot: Lt. Schäfer
Crew: Uffz. Manter, Klietmann
Aircraft Type: Ju 88
Markings: JR
Reason for Flight: Einsatz
Take-Off: from Volkel, 22.6.44 at 00.32 hrs
Landing: at Volkel, 22.6.55 at 02.35 hrs
Remarks: Duisburg, Köln, Bonn, 2 Abschüsse

Claims:
Lancaster, 22.6.44, 01.35 hrs, Map Grid Ref NO 1, about 25 km W of Köln, height 5,800 m, enemy aircraft on return flight

Lancaster, 22.6.44, 02.17 hrs, Map grid Ref JK 9, about 20 km ESE Dordrecht, height 3,200 m, enemy aircraft on outward flight.

For some unknown reason, post-war transcriptions of the claims details, written by Hans Schäfer in the 1970s, differ in various details. For the second claim on 22.6.44 he has written the location as "Tillburg" and the height of the engagement as "5.800 m", but what is written above is as was recorded in his book of achievements during the war.
