Nov 42:hastily formed from diverse elements of the XI. Fliegerkorps, but mostly airborne engineer troops, for employment in Tunisia following the Allied landings in Morocco and Algeria.
20 Nov 42:the first elements began arriving in Bizerte by air, mainly the III. Batallion, and took up positions in the Mateur sector.The rest of the Regiment followed over the next two weeks.
Dec 42 – Apr 43:Rgt. engaged offensively and defensively in northern Tunisia along the front between Bizerte and Tunis, especially in the Jefna-Mateur sector and west of it.
20 Apr – 6 May 43:Rgt. gradually withdrew toward Jefna and Mateur in the face of strong British forces that were pushing forward to clear northern Tunisia.After Oberst Barenthin was wounded on 10 March, the Rgt. was commanded by a Major Hanns Baier.
7-9 May 43:the remnants of the Regiment with two accompanying tanks fought their way to Porto Farina (today: Ghar El Melh) on the coast where they surrendered between 9 and 12 May as part of the approximately 13,000 German troops who laid down their arms and were taken prisoner.
