"This machine was found destroyed by the British Army on 6 July 1943"

That can't be correct. The Allied invasion of Sicily did not begin until the night of 9/10 July and the battle for Gerbini took place from 18–21 July: http://51hd.co.uk/history/sicily_gerbini

Probably a typo for 26 July? Thanks Nick for your correction!

The Aircraft wnr 18224 Baujahr is 1943 and so this is a little confusing that is was destroyed in 1943?

Cheers Mr Schmitt

Hello Nick and Marc,

It is true that this date, 6th of July 1943, is given like that in page 1836/1837 of Prien's book.
But just this does concern only Gerbini Platz Nr.1 We have 15/7 for Gerbini Platz 6... With some unknown date; Sciacca is given on 9/7.

Those pages from Prien are supposed to be extract from A.I.2(g) RAF report if I remember well.

So, a report error or a typo in Prien's book?

Regards, Franck.

Yes.

Re: Me109G6 Aircraft Information

I suppose that it could be possible that the aircraft was built early 1943 and destroyed a couple of months later. That is very feasible.

What I can add is that the Aircraft was built as an Me109G6-Trop Wnr 18224 and Baujahr 1943.

Thank you guys all the same for your additions to this thread. It would be nice to find out more information on this aircraft.

What about learning German language? Prien mentioned in his book the meaning of the date under the name of the place (p.1829, last sentence) ... it's the last known date of an German "Verlustmeldung" for this place and had nothing to do with allied troops.

Best regards

The W.Nr.18235 was built in April/May 1943 and had the first flight in the middle of May 1943 like the W.Nr.18209 too. So I suppose the W.Nr.18224 was built in the same time frame and in May/June transfered to the unit.
