Schaarsbergen

Hello there! I'm looking for more details on the type of explosive device used inside the Diogenes bunker, as I've heard different stories on this topic. Also, if there's information available regarding the nearby anti-aircraft position I'd be all ears…

Re: Schaarsbergen

On a battlefield tour to Diogenes and the Deelen airfield recently, I was told by the very knowledgeable guide, that the charges for demolishing the bunker were in fact pre-installed in the case the Luftwaffe would be forced to a hastily retreat.

Nevertheless, the charges did not manage to destroy the bunker. Tracings of charges that went off can be seen on walls of the bunker, and I could see a bulged and cracked ceiling in the boilleroom that was deformed, but did not break.

A fierce fire raging for day safter the place had been set alight, It did soot everything in the bunker, and that soot can be found on original pieces of he structure till this day.

On the outside damage from PIAT type of ammunition fired by liberating Canadian forces in 1945 can be seen. As well as the result of an airmine that went off in the postwar years just outside at the back of the building killing labourers.

Postwar for some time the bunker was used to shield and detonate unexploded munitions found in the area
