loss 6./NJG4 Do 217 at St. Jean 7-8 May 1944
Dear all,
Whilst working on the 7-8 May 1944 narrative and claims listings for 7/8 May 1944 for the NJWD 2nd ed., I found a Do 217 N-1 loss of 6./NJG4, which was reportedly shot down at 'St. Jean' in France. Actually, the Nachtjagd crew (Oblt. Schäffer and crew) claimed a Stirling destroyed off Ushant: Oblt. Karl-Heinz Schäffer: 5 6./NJG4 Stirling sea off Ushant (LJ 55): 500 m. 01.02 unidentified. Note: victory confirmed 18.8.1944 2 questions: -Who can tell me the location of St. Jean, as there are many St. Jean's in France? -who has any info on a Stirling loss (or possibly a Stirling damaged in air combat) off Ushant on 7-8 May 1944? Cheers and thanks for any info, Theo |

Hello Theo,
Here is the story of a Do 217 lost near Saint Jean de Boeuf, perhaps 'your' aircraft? http://www.histavia21.net/Do217/SJB001.htmcraft? Best regards ClinA-78 |

Thanks a lot for that -this all fits in now, I've just found out that Schäffer's claim actually took place in Fighter Grid Square LJ 55, matching with 10 kms. South of Charolles, which is quite close to the crash location of his Dornier.
Cheers, Theo |
