German "Window"
 

Hi Guys,

Does the forum have any information about the Luftwaffe's deployment of "chaff".
When was it first used and did only certain a/c deploy it, my interest is centred mainly around Italy in 1943.

Düppel was first noted in a raid on Bizerte, Tunisia on in early September 1943 and over Britain in a raid on Norwich a month later. It was used in the attack on Bari on 2 December 1943 and over the Anzio beach head, as well as in the Operation Steinbock attacks on Southern England. It was reportedly out of production by November 1944.

Ju 88s were probably the major users because they were the main bomber type but no doubt the Do 217, Ju 188 and He 177 units were using it over England too.

Dont forget "Rope"

"strips in the 2½ - 5 m range and the longer the strips, the fewer can be carried for a given weight, and consequently fewer can be dispensed. This type of Window was called Rope. In order to be effective against the British CH the strips needed to be 5 m long."

Thank you for your replies chaps,
I am interested by the entry in Chaz Bowyer's book "Beaufighter at War" about 600 Sqn, D-Day+ 8 (Sept 17th ?) over Salerno that states "During these operations the Nav/Rad operators experienced some difficulty with their sets and it was established that this was due to the first positive dropping of Window by enemy aircraft".
On Oct 23rd the Nav/Rads of 255 Sqn over Salerno were warned that "Window" was being dropped in their area, (does not state by which side) could both these incidents including dates and places be connected with the deployment of "Duppel"?
