Ian R. Gleed without any doubt!
His aircraft wore his initials (as a Wing Commander) and his famous "cat" emblem.

Gleed's Spitfire, but Lance Wade in the photo (as per the caption)? Perhaps the other photos in the album will help?

If it is the serial you are looking for, one of Gleed's Spitfires is well documented, but possibly he had more than one.

Hello,
Gleed's "IR-G" does seem to be a bit of a mystery with regard to AB502.

AB502VbT2541
M45FF 28-1-42 6MU 13-2-42 Crosby Co 20-2-42 Denmark 11-3-42 Takoradi 9-5-42 Middle East 5-6-42 145S 'ZX-B' Aboukir filter fitt [Destroyed in air raid LG 154 22-8-42] 224Wing shot down by Bf109 Tunisia 16-4-43 A/C Gleed killed

so perhaps S/L Wade used an earlier "IR-G" or was Gleed lost in yet another Spitfire ?

Anyone have the Unit ORB for the date of Wade's force landing ?

Hello,

The photo of Lance Wade was taken after he crash landed in Gleed's Spitfire VB on February 26, 1943 after being hit by British flak. Wade had damaged an Me 109 on this mission.

This Spitfire was Gleed's "IRG (Figaro)" ER 170, which he only flew for a short time in February, 1943. Most likely he needed a new regular plane after Wade's incident. In March 43 he began flying "IRG (Figaro) AB502, in which he completed at least 35 operational missions, and in which he was shot down on April 16, 1943.

(See Norman Franks "Fighter Leader" (William Kimber, 1978), where most of this information is derived. There are also 3 good photos of ER 170 in this book. These photos, a scan of which I have attached, are located between pages 128 and 129 of this excellent book.)

The second photo of a crashed Spitfire is unrelated to the first (With Lance Wade) and is thought to be one of 145 sqdn's - possible the Polish Flight.
