In "Mighty Eighth War Diary" by Roger A. Freeman he states the 1st fig= a/c considered destroyed, the 2nd= a/c probably destroyed, and the 3rd= a/c damaged.

Pilots made claims under those categories. At the end of a sortie report it will say (e.g.) "I CLAIM ONE ME 109 DESTROYED" or "I CLAIM ONE JU 87 DAMAGED."

Intelligence Officers could downgrade or upgrade claims if more information was received. E.g. a "probable" could become a "destroyed" if a wreck was found later.
