Eagle Attacking Winged British Lion Emblem

Dear All,

I save the attached photo of a Bf 110 C from the recently finished eBay auction here http://www.ebay.de/itm/Foto-eines-Fl...-/371218790078. In the back of the photo is written "Flgpl. Rangsdorf". The propeller tips appear to have been white.

My query is as follows - is it possible that this photo was taken sometime between 1.3.40. and 26.6.40, before the 4. Staffel of ZG 1 was renamed 7./ZG76? I have a number of photos of the Bf 110 C/D aircraft sporting this emblem in Scandinavia, but this one might have been taken before, while the Staffel was still designated 4./ZG 1.

Any comments/remarks will be much appreciated.

Regards,
Sinisa

Sinisa,

I've studied this and find no evidence for the use of this insignia prior to the deployment of 7./ZG26 to Norway at the end of 1940.

Re: Eagle Attacking Winged British Lion Emblem

Larry,

Thank you for your prompt reply. What puzzled me about this photo is firstly the writing on the back of the photo, which points to the location in the western part of Germany, I believe. This might, or might not be relevant since the writing might have been added at some later date, even after the war.

Secondly, there are no wooden planks commonly seen on the Norwegian airfields - for comparison please refer to the attached photo, which was taken from a photo album with the associated writing "Ltn. Brandis erster Abschuss", which would be claimed on 9-Apr-1941, while with 1.(Z)/JG 77 -100km SW Herdla; Blenheim (N3609) "QY-H" of 254 Sqn, RAF flown by P/O JA Pawy, 3 killed - source http://www.luftwaffe.cz/brandis.html.

Regards,
Sinisa
