Lysander shot down by Hurricane 11 July 1940
Hi guys
On 11 July 1940, Hurricanes erroneously attacked Lysander L6870 of the School of Army Co-operation somewhere in the Exeter area, mortally wounding one crew member (Plt Off B. Brookes) Any information? Hurricane unit? Cheers Brian |

Hi guys
I should have written 17 July!! However, I have since been guided to Air 81/1134. So another trip to TNA required! Cheers Brian |

Thanks Alex
This resulted from my earlier enquiry! I'm still trying to find the Hurricane pilot/squadron involved. Cheers Brian |
Re: Lysander shot down by Hurricane 11 July 1940
Hello Brian,
Foreman's vol 1 of RAF Victory Claims has three claims for the 17th July 40. Two are Hurricane Sqdns. 615 sqn a Do17 damaged - time 1200. S. Redhill. and 145 Sqn a Ju88 damaged - time 1600. St. Catherines Point. Today we would say it would be impossible to miss i.d a Ju88 for a Lysander. But way back then I think of the wing shapes ( ju88 outer wing tapers to a point. Lysander wing also tapers to a point ) and think that they could have been miss i.d'd in the excitement of the sighting and perhaps visabillity was not good (what was the weather that day in the area of the claim ?) the time fits(1600) as does the RAF aircraft type( Hurricane), two out of four ( twin motor Ju88 versa single motor Lysander).
