Claim Hptm. Schmitter/Fw. Gräber 15./KG2 23-24.8.43?
 

Dear all,

On the night of 23-24 August 1943, Hptm. Schmitter of 15./KG2 destroyed a 97 Squadron Lancaster near Cambridge:

Hptm. Wilhelm Schmitter: 2 15./KG2 4-mot E. Cambridge: 200-300 m. 04.08 97 Sqn Lancaster EE105

Is it correct that Schmitter himself achieved the kill, or was it shot down by his Bordfunker Fw. Heinz Gräber?

I have documented a fair amount about Schmitters history including the flight you noted. If you click on the link below to my website and scroll down to 23/24 August 43 there is an accounting of this loss by the Lancaster pilot.

It would appear based on his recollection that Schmitters was responsible for the victory.
