Hungarian Bf 109G's at Zagreb-Lucko in March 1945

On 14 March 1945 eight Hungarian Bf 109G's arrived to Zagreb-Lučko airfield in Croatia, followed by a couple of more in days that followed. Their stay was a short one and in early April they flew away to Austria. Whilst at Lučko they seem not to have taken part in any operational missions, instead flew just a couple of training sorties. One Bf 109G belly-landed at the airfield due to technical malfunction and was left behind. Does anybody know to which unit did they belong? I assume it could be 101/9. V.Szd.

Cheers,
Boris

I never heard, so far, about the presence of Hungarian Bf 109Gs in Croatia, so I cannot comment, except for the fact that the 101/9. training squadron (actually, the entire 101/III. Group) was disbanded in March 1945.

Hi Denes,

There report that I have is pretty precise both about the date of arrival of the unit and disposition of its aircraft (southwestern corner of the airfield, next to Croat AF Bf 109's). It also says that Croat and Hungarian pilots didn't socialize much and were rather restrained. It mentions that they flew only sporadic training missions, and only when the fuel was provided by the Germans, and that Hungarian pilots were very young, except for a few men and their commander. In conversation Hungarian pilots stated that they arrived from area of Nagykanizsa-Kiskomaron. Apart from that, I have four statements of former Croat AF pilots which confirm the presence of this unit in given time and location when interviewed.

Cheers,
Boris

Boris,

As I wrote you to your e-mail, you need to be a bit patient and after I'll have a little time, I'll answer all of your questions.

Incidentally 101/9. Squdron was not a training squadron and it was not disbanded in March, 1945 (the 101/III. Group was not disbanded either).
