POW Frank Reed escaped

Hi all! I was told you may be able to help me. I have been very angry at the lack of respect and recognition our war heroes have received, and it really came to a head when I was doing genealogy and could find no reference to my great uncle Francis L. Reed he stormed the beaches of Normandy, was a POW after being shot down from a glider and escaped prison camp. How can I find out about his career? The only thing I know about it is from family stories. He came back to Kansas started a career in drinking (was very successful I hear) and miserably drank himself to death. No acknowledgement of his accomplishments or records . Can anyone help me find information on my great uncle's career? He should be honored for his bravery and service to this country. Thank you

You can send for his service records and any copies of commendations, awards and medals. Only request form they will accept is Standard Form
180 ( SF - 180 ). You can get this form and directions for use on the above websites. Click on forms. To get a full report and copy of his Discharge - DD214 , it must be signed by next of kin. Note- there was a fire at the Personnel records facility, 1973. Records could have been destroyed.
To Find other resources - US Army archives WW II - Search
Best wishes,
Mike
