JGr 101 Demon in the Clouds Emblem
 

All,

With reference Prien, Stemmer and others JFV der Deutschen LW 1934-45, Part II, Sitzkrieg, there are a number of photos of the Bf 109 E-1/E-3 aircraft in the 1939 style RLM 70/71/65 camouflage, showing the emblem being sported on the 2./JGr 101 aircraft with the red numerals.

The attached photo is somewhat different, source: an expired eBay auction, - it shows the JGr 101 aircraft with the 1940 style RLM 71/02/65 style camouflage in the winter of 1939-40. The demon in the clouds emblem has been retained, but the aircraft numerals seem to be either just outlined in black, or perhaps even either white or yellow outlined in black.

The above assessment brings two distinct possibilities - either the Staffel changed the colour of its identification numerals with the change of the aircraft camouflage scheme, which happened with some other Gruppen, or the emblem was promoted to perhaps the Gruppe emblem level.

Any comments will be much appreciated.

Since 3. Staffel retained its' "Runing dog" on cowling during the same period (code number being oulined yellow surrounded black) ... I don't know how "The devil in a cloud" could have been - and should have been - promoted to at Gruppe emblem level.

Well ... these are my thoughts.

Good morning Franck,

I have come across a singular Bf 109 E-1/E-3 of 3./JGr 101 with the later style aircraft camouflage sporting the "Racki" emblem on the starboard side of the aircraft, copy attached. Do you happen to have some more photos?

For the reference purposes, I also attach a photo of 2./JGr 101 aircraft with the RLM 70/71/65 style camouflage.

Both photos are from expired eBay auctions.

We have both and I have other "Racki" ...

If "Racki" ... means it's a fox (Reineke) not a dog. Am I right?
As for Rote 2 I hope you do remember the conversation we (I mean all) had in LEMB concerning the II. Gruppe bar.

If you have more photos of the 3./JGr 101 emblem sported on the aircraft with the RLM 71/02/65 camouflage, can you post them here for the members' ready reference?

"Racki" was a little dog, not fox. Page 517, Teil 2, in my opinion apparently did not get it exactly right.

I posted the "Red 2" to illustrate the different style of the aircraft numeral, and from what I can see the horizontal bar was painted over with the introduction of the new camouflage. Will try and recover the LEMB discussion on the Gruppe's identification bar.

read on a few pages in JFV Vol. 2 and you will find the explanation for the change of style of the numerals of 2./JGr. 101 ( p 517 and photo on p 520 ) - on the 40style camouflage scheme they consisted of black outlines only and that is what you see in your photo in post # 1.

The reason I had to post this query on the TOCH is that my copy of your and other esteemed authors' book with the information that I require, that is JFV der Deutschen LW 1934-45, Teil 2, is a couple of thousand kilometers away, and thus unavailable to me at present.
