Luftwaffe vs. Italian airforce

Hi,

I have following questions concerning the clashes between German and Italian airforce:
- on 11.09.43 Olt.W.Ernst from 9/JG77 claimed one Cant 1007 and two Breda 88 shot down. Anybody knows the victims?
- on 03.04.44 one Cant 1007 from 88 Gruppo was shot down by JG27`s Messerschmitts. Anybody knows the serial of this aircraft?
- on 14.05.44 five Cants 1007 were shot down and two more crash-landed (also from 88 Gruppo).
Anybody could give me the serials of this aicrafts?

TIA

Robert

These were the losses on 14 may 1944 (source: Coccarde Tricolori by G. Alegi and B. Catalanotto):

MM 24929 shot down
MM 25425 damaged
MM 25428 shot down
MM 25429 "
MM 25435 "
MM 25436 damaged
MM 25438 shot down

The italian aircraft attacked on 11 september 1943 were all CZ.1007.
Two aircraft should have been lost that day in the area between Corsica and Sardinia but I don't know the serials as I don't know the identity of the CZ.1007 lost on 3 april 1944.

Hi Gianandrea,

thanks for the serials! I have one question more: from which unit came this 2 Cants lost on 11.09.43?

Re: Luftwaffe vs. Italian airforce

I have to amend my previous statement.
According to more reliable italian sources, the two CANT Z. 1007 lost on 11 september 1943 were shot down by german AAA; at least another one,
MM 25427 from 86° Grp. 191a Sq., was badly damaged by the AAA.

The two lost aircraft belonged almost for sure to 261a Sq., 88° Gruppo.

On the very same 11 september 1943, two S.79 were shot down by Bf.109 near the Sardinia coast- They were two torpedo aircraft of the 278a Sq. of the 132° Gruppo. One source wrote that they were MM 24231 and MM 24492 but, according to Coccarde tricolori, the first one was still operated by the Air Force (so called Co-belligerant) in january 1944 so the identification is not sure.
The pilot of one of the two S.79 was Ottone Sponza, that then served in the torpedo unit of the ANR. The german fighter attack forced two other
S.79 of the same unit to come back to Siena: the pilot of one of them
was the famous torpedo aircraft ace Carlo Faggioni, who served and lost his life in combat with the ANR.

Ciao

Re: Luftwaffe vs. Italian airforce

Hi Alex,

yes I know but I have not hints that some of this losses were caused by German fighters activities. Do you know any such cases?

Robert
