Highly decorated Soviet Fighter pilot shot down 12-30-42 near Stalingrad
In an old copy of Jägerblatt (April 73), there was a short history of “Platzschutzstaffel Pitomnik” by Kurt Ebener, the highest scoring pilot in this small unit.
The war diary records that on December 30,1942 German light flak shot down a Soviet fighter whose occupant baled out at a low altitude. The parachute failed to open properly and the pilot slammed into the snow near the unit command post. In spite of attention, by the unit doctor, the pilot died during medical evacuation. According to the history he was highly decorated. Does anyone know the identity of the pilot? |

The date is correct but this pilot was shot down near Leningrad.
The other pilot was shot down near Stalingrad, AKA Pitomnik. |

I suppose a date mistake. This might happen on January 12 or January 17.
