Vince you could well be right - does anyone know where this unit was based in May 1943?

Re: Name of pilot???

Melvin,

If this is the photo I think it is - a close up of a Bf 109 G-6 with the Wolf's head emblem behind the cockpit - III./JG 77

17.4.43 - 7.5.43 Korbous (Tunisia) Bf 109G
7.5.43 - 11.5.43 Sciacca (Sicily) Bf 109G
11.5.43 - 1.6.43 Foggia (Sicily) Bf 109G

Having said that, they might have flown to Sardinia as well.

Sinisa

Yes, Chilivani, which is in Sardinia, base for III./JG77 for a while but later in June.
As usual with that kind of back writings it's either May and Sciacca or Foggia (for me no doubts those photos have been taken in Sciacca) or Chilivani and not in May.

Isn't Foggia on the east side Italy where the bulge in the coastline is?

Re: Name of pilot???

Post No.6: Correct, I mistook it for Contrada Foggia, while searching Sciacca.

...On 10 May the Gruppe moved to Foggia, where it handed over its remaining aircraft to other units and was re-equipped with the Bf 109 G-6 trop aircraft.

... On 8 June followed the move to Sardinia, the Chilivani airfield near Ozieri. There the Gruppe was subordinated to the Fliegerführer Sardinien, and there it remained in the following weeks, tasked with aerial protection.
