Hans Meyer, Jagdgeschwader 54
 

A gentleman named Hans Meyer has come to my attention as someone currently appearing on the speaking circuit--he was listed as a guest at the Reading airshow. He is featured in two videos on the web:

though my personal library references have failed to highlight his experiences within JG54, a squadron in which I have interest. Does anyone have any information related to Mr. Meyer, or can anyone point me in the direction of a web resource I may have overlooked. Many thanks in advance.

We see that there was a Hans Meyer with JG 54, with a few details given.

I am sure that others with an interest in JG 54 can help you out, but what sort of information do you want?

I would like to find out more regarding his combat carreer with Jagdgeschwader 54 and his training to become a fighter pilot.

It may be nothing other than an old man's memory but he refers to shooting down "Ratas" in 1944 when the Russians were no longer flying such aircraft in front line service. He also refers to training on a Bf108 Taifun but I don't believe these liaison aircraft were used very often as trainers. He is also one of the few people I have ever heard of that was trained as a pilot but was converted to infantry at the end of the war. Pilots were generally reassigned to another unit and the ground crew were converted to infantry. If you meet the man ask for the names of some of his squadron mates, what staffel he flew with and who was his Staffelfuhrer. You can also ask what airfields he flew from. If you get nothing but generalities for answers then be suspicious.

Thank yuo for your comments Del. I know the claims by Mr. Meyer are a bit vague. I am doing some factchecking myself. I will post those results in a few days.Maybe there are some people who could provide more input or have information that Meyer did fly for JG54?
