June 28,1944,Air Battle Over Bucharest

Gentlemen,

On page 51 of the book "Checkertail Clan," USAAF fighter pilots had engaged nearly 50 enemy planes over Bucharest and shot down 17 without loss. What fighter units had come against the USAAF pilots?

Sincerely,

Edward L. Hsiao

Succinctely for the Luftwaffe :
I./JG53 + 6./JG 301, Bf 109 G-6
III./JG77 + 10./JG 301, Bf 109 G-6
II./SG 2, Fw 190 F-8.
Don't know exactly for the Rumanian units.
Grupul 1 de vanatoare lost 2 IAR-80C.

Gentlemen,

I thought that most of the losses among the defenders were Romanians. It's known that some of the Romanian flying units were flying Bf-109Gs. Now I'm not sure.

Sincerely,

From the JG 53 Prien book:
JG 53: 5 Bf 109s 100% (3WIA) 1-20% and 1 3% (WIA)
6/JG 301 2 MIA

It looks like they got some.

Dear Sir,

Thank you for your reply. Just as I thought. The Romanians had suffered plenty of losses during that air battle over their capital city. The Luftwaffe fighter losses were pretty small indeed.

Sincerely,

Edward L. Hsiao

I have one Bf 109G and three I.A.R. 80/81s lost by the Rumanians.
Therefore, the Luftwaffe Bf 109Gs bore most of the losses, at least eleven of them crashed that day in Rumania, others were damaged.
