Decimomannu,Sardinia

Gentlemen,

On May 19th,1943,Eleven Bf-109s had defended an important air depot at Decimomannu,Sardina. There opponents were P-40Fs of the 325th Fighter Squadron. What was the fighter unit that was fighting the 325th? The 325th lost two P-40s. Its opponent lost five Bf-109s. From the book "Checkertail Clan",page 19.
Sincerely,

Edward L. Hsiao

Gentlemen,

Have any ideas what Axis squadron fought the USAAF fighters on that day?

Sincerely,

Hello
II./JG 51 was based on Sardinia at that time, and III./JG 77 arrived at the beginning of June after it had achieved combat capacity after the debacle in Tunisia.

Edward,

the II./JG 51 fought that battle. Uffz. Langer and Oblt. Rammelt both from 4./JG 51 claimed one P-40 each and Uffz. Hagemeister from 6./JG 51 was shot down and reported missing.

Other German fighter losses at that day happened over Sicily.

Re: Decimomannu,Sardinia

Gentlemen,

Thank you so much for your answers. It seems that the P-40 pilots had a bit of a problem fighting against the Bf-109s and overclaimed their victories over Bf-109s.

Sincerely,

Edward L. Hsiao
