Seafire claims

I have some claims for FAA Seafires that I wonder if anyone can match up to a known Luftwaffe loss:

22 Aug 44 North cape 2 Bv 138 destroyed 894 Sqn Indefatigable

10 Nov 42 off Oran 1 Ju 88 damaged 884 Sqn Victorious note there is a picture from a gun camera film of this aircraft in the book Send her Victorious show smoke trailing from its starboard engine. The Ju 88 could be from a recon unit or possibly Wekusta 26

15 Oct 44 near Athens Greece 1 Ju 88 destroyed 809 Sqn Stalker the book "Seafire the Spitfire that went to Sea' has a picture from a film of the plane going down. it could belong to a recon unit or possibly Wekusta 27.

17 oct 44 Volos Do 24 destroyed seen to crash in the water in flames 809 Sqn Stalker

Re: Seafire claims

In Greece in October 1944 a Ju 88 was probably going to belong either to 3.(F)/33 (who had one alongside their Ju 188s) or 2.(F)/123. Byron will probably know more about this, though.

I think 2/123 had left the Med by then

Re: Seafire claims

3.(F)/33 lost one Ju 88 D-1 "in enemy action" that month (Oct 44) and other loss as "non-ops". NVM or serials are not known for this (Matti?)

2.(F)/123 was without a/c in Oct 1944.

Hi James

Both the October 1944 combats are recorded in my FIGHTERS OVER THE AEGEAN book:

15 October: Ju88T 4U+?K of 2.(F)/123 piloted by Fw Erich Labus was shot down by Lt(A) David Ogle; the Interrogation Report of Uffz Alfred Kondek (WTOp) is included in the book.

17 October: Do24 CM+IQ of Seenotstfl.7 captained by Ltn Johann Zwarte had just taken off on a mercy flight transporting wounded to Salonika. It fell to the guns of Sub-Lts(A) A.C.S. Morrison, A.B. Foley and G.C. Morris, before the wreck was strafed by Sub-Lts(A) G.S. Macartney and D.D. James. All on board were killed.

Worth buying the book!
Cheers
Brian

Re: Seafire claims

Brian, interesting.
All aircraft of 2.(F)/123 (below) transferred out in September 44, to other unit.

Re: Seafire claims

I have Lt Witt, Fw Labus , Uffz Michna all missing with 2/123 but 28 Sep 44 and Uffz Alfred Kondek POW .

22 Aug 44 loss was 1/130 commanded by Lt August Ohlinger; cannot read details of the aircraft and can only find one

Re: Seafire claims

All the remaining aircraft (1 x Ju88D-1, 1 x Ju88T-1, 7 x Ju88T-3 and 1 x Ju86R-1) from 2.(F)/123 were given in September 1944 to 3.(F)/33.

The loss from 15.10.44 must have been one of these aircraft, still with the old code 4U+.K in place but operated by 3.(F)/33.

That one: "22 Aug 44 North cape 2 Bv 138 destroyed 894 Sqn Indefatigable" was an aircraft of 3./SAGr 130 with Lt. Fohlinger.

Re: Seafire claims

(F)/130 only recorded one loss on 22 Aug 44 which was 1/130 and Lt August Franz Oehlinger (73178/146) was the BO and commander so maybe Föhlinger/Oehlinger have got mixed up? Looks like it was 6I+BH
