Bf109G-10/R2 at Campoformido ?
 

Hi Gents,

The two following photos have been put in line in Facebook by the owner, Alan Mark Taylor.
They come from a SAAF photo album (Said 3°Sqn)
It's obviously - for me - a G-10/R2, hence; not that much choice, a NAGr.11 machine found at Campoformido.

Thoughts ?

Probably one of these:

5 Apr 45: bombed by 168 B-24 Liberators – 3 x Bf 109s destroyed, 9 x Bf 109s damaged, 2 x Fw 190s and 3 x Fi 156s damaged with 1./NAGr. 11 suffering the majority of these losses.

This was the last Allied raid on Campoformido.

Must be. But can you remember me the list of machines found there ? Didn't find in former threads, though I'm sure it has been given times ago.

This looks like a more or less direct re-birth of the old thread about the Bf 109 G-10/R2 W.Nr. 77022? (http://forum.12oclockhigh.net/showth...&highlight=770). In it there were several informations about the "survivors" of Campoformido, which I report here:

"According to the list of aircraft found at Campoformido compiled by Nick, Ferdinando and Gabriele Valentini, there were 11 Bf 109's, an Ar. 34, two Ju 188's and a Ju 88 found by No. 1 Forward Intelligence Unit (F.I.U.) Party B on 25 May 1945:

Of those 11 Bf 109 G's, 5 are positively identified as G-8's (W.Nr. 201129, 201134, 230132, 230144, 230292) and one more as our already noted Bf 109 G-10/R2 W.Nr. 770338. All those machines belonged to NAGr. 11.

The five remaining were found as follows:

- Bf 109 G, completely burnt out
- Bf 109 G, demolished, 1x MG 151 only
- Bf 109 G, completely burnt out
- Bf 109 G, completely burnt out, 1x MG 151 only
- Bf 109 G, completely burnt out, 1 x MG 151 only."

To these, we may (?) addthe two following G-10/R2s ...

"...when the 1° Gruppo was re-equipped in February 1945 with new Bf 109s, a couple of G-10/R2s were (erroneously) among the deliveries coming from German Luftparks.

Those, namely W.Nr. 770 184 and 770 209, were immediately flown to NaGr.11 in Campoformido on 27 February"

which may (?) be among those "completely burnt out" wrecks reported.

On top of that we must surely add the "W.Nr. 77022?" of the previously quoted thread which certainly was found in the wide dispersal area around Campoformido a/f and wasn't included in the No.1 F.I.U. (party B) report.

Hope this answers some of the questions or (maybe) helps to raise some new ones... ;)

Was there any list found of the a/c seen at Tissano??
Nobody has mentioned that airfield, and I think that is a possibility.

I never found any report on Tissano, and no mention of it as an operational airfield in the late war period. Sorry.

The town of Tissano fell within a huge dispersal area built by the Todt organisation that included and linked originally separated landing grounds by means of ramified taxi tracks along which dozens of open shelters were placed. Tissano was also halfway between the two paved runways of Risano ("V shaped") and Bicinicco (the latter called by the ANR S.Maria La Longa remained incomplete) so this might add more confusion.

AFAIK, Tissano can be considered part of the huge dispersal area of both Campoformido and Lavariano a/f.

Considering the great extension of such area in no surprise, for instance, that the G-10/R2 W.Nr. 770 22x which was seen and discussed a few years ago, completely escaped to the Intelligence reports which were compiled in May 1945.

At least this is my educated guess...
