Does somebody know some production details of Wellington Z1207

Dear All,

Does somebody could help me with so specifications about the production of the Wellington Mk. IV Z1207. The bomber crashed in the Waddensea when it was on a attack on Emden - 20/21 January 1942.

Thank you in advance for your kind help.

René

Hello ,

Found this info :

The Wellington Mk. IV was powered by two US Pratt and Whitney Twin Wasp fourteen cylinder R-1830 engines. It had the smallest production run of all the marks that saw squadron service, with no more than 220 being produced at the Chester factories. These equipped two Polish squadrons (300 and 301 Sqn) and one RAAF (460 Sqn) squadron.

Alain/René

I can only find 195 Mk IV built
Z1182-1183, Z1202-1221, Z1243-1292, Z1311-1345, Z1375-1424, Z1459-1496.
The Putnam book mentions both figures, but I can't locate the other 25 serial numbers.

Z1207 was delivered about late June/early July 1941. It was used by only one operational unit, 142 Sq, before going missing on the Emden raid 20-21.1.1942.

Alain, as far as I know also 305 (Polish) Sqn and 458 Sqn RAAF also used this version of Wellington.

Z1207 was manufactured by Vickers-Armstrongs at Hawarden

Re: Does somebody know some production details of Wellington Z1207

Just for the record, the wartime Vickers Armstrongs factory is now used to build wings for the Airbus. VA called it their Chester factory. Chester city in England is only four miles away but the factory is actually just over the border in Wales. The airfield next to the factory was once RAF Hawarden (pronounced Harden) and is still known as Hawarden after a nearby village. All very confusing!
