9/JG26 Fronhöfer Wilhelm 31August 1940 Headcorn
1 Attachment(s)
Although a well known subject over many years, always in every publication with the red Höllehund untill recently on this blogspot
http://theprofilepaintshop.blogspot.se/ It "is" black and outlined in red, looking at the photo I included he is probably right. An old article in SAM of Sept.1979 on this, describes in brief an eyewitness account of a W.S.Walton of Ham Surrey who performed some measuring and colour matching at the time,I wonder how he saw it,anyone has a copy of his notes? |
Re: 9/JG26 Fronhöfer Wilhelm 31August 1940 Headcorn
I have the following:
The RAF A.I.1.(g) Report on Crashed Enemy Aircraft, Serial No. 22 of 7 November 1940, Item No.1, Individual Report No. 4/115 gave the account of the circumstances of the 9./JG 26 Staffelkapitän, Oblt. Heinz Ebeling’s Bf 109 E-4, W.Nr. 2740*, "Yellow 1" crash following the collision with the Staffel’s Bf 109 E-1, W.Nr. 3259, "Yellow 11" at Wittersham, Kent on 5 November 1940, along with remarks on the emblem: "…Crest; a black winged demon encircled in red …" Not the same aircraft, but the emblem style would be. |
Re: 9/JG26 Fronhöfer Wilhelm 31August 1940 Headcorn
This proves that there was at least a black version of it during the Battle.
Thanks for replying. |
Re: 9/JG26 Fronhöfer Wilhelm 31August 1940 Headcorn
You are welcome.
I believe that the black version was in fact introduced shortly before the Battle of France, April/May 1940. |

René,
The photo you posted to start this thread off shows a black insignia with a thin red outline. |

Re: 9/JG26 Fronhöfer Wilhelm 31August 1940 Headcorn
Bit of a bump but...
Can anyone confirm or bust my theory that this aircraft has a 70/71 upper surrface? looking at the right wing it does appear to have the splinter pattern, add that to the werk number being masked with a green background. I'm researching this aircraft for a future modelling attempt and am keen to find a unique scheme. |
