Neubiberg, May 1945
Which second Gruppe of a Schlachtgeschwader was at Neubiberg on 8 May 1945?
I have two contenders: - Part of II./SG 2 fled to the West from Kummer-am-See (Mimoň-Hradcany) on the last day of the war. - II./SG 10 had been pulled out to the Munich area probably as early as the second week of March to train (at least one Staffel) on Panzerblitz-equiped Fw 190 F-8s. Most of this Gruppe was withdrawn to Wels on 3 May. I am no monomaniac on Fw 190 "Schlacht" versions, but I am currently writing a special issue (don't dream, it's in French!) on this particular subject for Aéro-Journal. Hence, the number of messages I have recently posted on this topic. Thanks in advance. Chris |

Your attached image shows a Fw190 F9 WNr 440401 with an engine number 347763 and a green technical officer chevron painted on the side and a second groupe bar. This plane was captured at Herzogenaurach May 1945. Some sources said it was from II/SG3 and some other from II/SG10. Note: none bomb racks under the wings. It was also tested by 56th Fighter Group after the war. Best regards, Lumabe. |

I have made a decades-long study of the aircraft surrendered and abandoned at Fliegerhorst Neubiberg. You are correct regarding the Werknummer and Motornummer of the Fw 190 F-9 that Chris posted. However, unless I am mistaken this aircraft was flown in to surrender with at least thirteen other Fw 190s at Neubiberg and not Fl.Horst Herzogenaurach. I have numerous photos of WNr. 440401 in which other aircraft known to have been photographed at Neubiberg are visible in the background. If you have information to the contrary, I would love to correct my records. Steve Sheflin |

Hi Christian.
Yellow nose band was for Luftflotte 4 and order of battle shows that late in the war only I./SG2 and full SG10 stay under Luftflotte4 command. So I believe that Neubiberg airplanes are from II./SG10. On the other side, "yellow 8" and "chevron green2" pictured on a color film show previous markings (fuselage digit and 2nd group horizontal bar) covered with a green paint. So I believe they could be airplanes that II./SG2 gave to I./SG2 when they left... Olivier |
