Intruder op's over UK Sept 1943

Hi,

Was any intruder operations mounted by the Germans on the night of either 6/7th September or 7/8th September 1943 over the East Anglia region. If so was any claims made, or German loss sustained.

Thank you.

Steve

I have looked through the logbook copies I have. I have just one pilot carrying out a mission airborne from Schiphol at 0342 hrs on 7 Sep 43, landing 0510 hrs. No claims or losses. Would have thought this question should have been asked on the Luftwaffe Board?

According to Intruders Over Britain by Simon Parry there is a Stirling loss attributed to an intruder on the 7th September 1943.
Stirling I
W7455 of No. 1657 CU
Forced to crash land at Great Thurlow in Suffolk.
Pilot Officer L.F. Smith who was the instructor was at the controls and was able to make a crash landing that enabled the rest of the crew to evacuate the aircraft before it burst in to flames. P/O Smith died in White Lodge Hospital in Newmarket the following day.
The rest of the crew were injured to varying degrees and went to the same hospital in Newmarket.

Aircraft was engaged by a Me-410 while on a training flight from RAF Stradishall.

No German losses.

Hi,

It is this every incident I am interested in. I am not sure if this information is correct, the details on the Stirling are known, it is just the circumstances. Does it name the Me410 unit involved, and where they over East Anglia at the time of the incident?

Regards

Steve

It doesn't list the Luftwaffe unit for that specific attack as such but does say that V/KG-2 began to intercept bombers over the UK from August to October 1943.
It doesn't say where over East Anglia they were when attacked, just what has been mentioned in my previous post.

The only unit carrying out intruder missions over UK was V/KG 2 and no claims were submitted
