fate of Me 163 AV5 W.Nr. 163 00 00 002 GG+EA
Gentlemen,
On p. 91 of Wolfgang Spate's Top Secret Bird, he describes the take-off crash of Johannes Kiel in Me 163 AV5 at Peenemunde on 24 August 1942. www.danielsww2.com/ME163.html This source not only shows the burned GG+EA but the stamp on the back of the picture bears the date 25 Aug. 1942 as the "Tag d. Auf." Other sources I have found put the comment "burnt out at Peenemunde" or "destroyed" with this incident. www.scribd.com/doc/64126257/Messerchmitt-Me-163-Kome-Monografie-35#scribd However, this source on p.14 shows Heini Dittmar's flugbuch, which lists flight numbers 1088 to 1095 from 8 Nov. to 13 Nov. 1942 in "GG+EA" at Augsburg. On the last of these flights the skid failed to deploy and Dittmar suffered serious spinal injuries. Is there a report on this latter accident that gives the percent of damage to the aircraft? Best regards, Jim Geens |

The page from Heini Dittmar's flugbuch is from 1941 not 1942.
