Re: Il 20° Gruppo Caccia. Dalle origini all'Africa Settentrionale 1939-1941. Vol.1

The 20° Gruppo Caccia was created on 1 June 1939 at Ciampino South, and had immediately in the organic 351ª Squadriglia mounted on Fiat G.50 and shortly after 352ª and 353ª with their Fiat CR.32. The 20° Gruppo under the command of maggiore Mario Bonzano was initially placed first in the employ of the 52° Stormo and, since 1 October 1939, in the newly formed 51° Stormo. Shortly after the 20° Gruppo passed through in 56° Stormo with which it took part, from the autumn of 1940, in the campaign on the front of the Channel where, however, failed to cross its weapons with the enemy fighters. The 20° Gruppo, returned from the dreary northern skies, it was re-equipped with the latest Fiat G.50bis and sent, in May 1941, in North Africa, where it remained until the end of the year. It, which in the meantime had received 151ª Squadriglia yielding the 351ª at the 155° Gruppo, faced several dogfights claiming over 40 planes shot dowm and several mechanized vehicles destroyed on the ground. The unit of "Black Cat", in these eight months spent in the skies of Libya and Egypt, lost eight pilots and one of them (capitano Mario Montefusco) was decorated with Medaglia d'Oro al Valor militare. The text accompanied by 180 pics, many of which are new, and ten color profiles depicting the aircraft of the 20° Gruppo, is the result of extensive research at the Italian and foreign documentary sources. This book is a tribute to all men, fighters or specialists, who paid tribute to the emblem of the "Black Cat" from the date of foundation of the unit until the end of 1941.
