Macr 9740

Hi All,
does anybody have information regarding MACR 9740?

It is a Lancaster JB 540 lost on 25 Feb 1944. Any info is welcome.

Ragards,

Norbert

Re: Macr 9740

Norbert - this is an odd case. JB540 shot down 2-24-44. It is listed as a
12 Squadron a/c but had code UM - L , a 626 Sq. code. Also , why was there a USAAF MACR ??? Special Ops? Americans on board?
Hopefully - a Lancaster buff can answer this .
Cheers

Re: Macr 9740

Thanks for the reply.

The following crew was on board, according to my information:
1st Lt. S. W. Penner, USAF
Sgt. W. L. Alder, RCAF
Sgt. P. F. McCaughey, RAAF
F/S W. A. Lampkin
Sgt. K. Allen
Sgt. S. T. Wright
Sgt. W. E. Allen

Indeed a mixed crew, that's why there is a MACR.

It is interesting that you mention the code UM-L, I have PH-L. I guess that makes it another question regarding the correct code.

Hopefully someone can shed some light on this mystery,

Norbert

Re: Macr 9740

Norbert - thanks for the info - I wonder why the Pilot was USAAF?
I got my info from " Avro Lancaster , the Definitive Record " by Harry Holmes. I just went back through it and found that in one section JB540 was listed as UM - L but in another , PH - L , may have been a misprint.
Are you going to order the MACR from Maxwell?
Sorry for the mixup!
Cheers

Re: Macr 9740

No problem, I will try to find out what the correct registration was. I had't planned on ordering the MACR from Maxwell but if it is the only way to get to the bottom of it I will. Maybe there is somone from this board who might be able to help me with my research.

Regards,

Norbert

Hi Norbert

According to Shorley "Bomber Command Losses 1944", p.97
Lancaster III JB 540 PH-L from 12 sqd was downed night 24-25 feb. 1944
Op. Schweinfurt. 1st Lt Penner was from California. All crew members are buried in Dürnbach War Cemetery.

Good luck.
