Ju88 shot down over Malta 20 December 1941
 

Hi guys

I don't seem to have the identity of this Ju88 (or crew), shot down on 20 December 1941 over Malta, and seen to have crashed in the sea.

Can anyone help please?

There is a Ju88 of I/NJG 2 on the 19th Dec. 2 Pows and one killed ,

Crew:
Leutnant Wilhelm Brauns(Pilot) POW wounded/injured
Gefreiter Johannes Matuschka (Wireless Operator) +
Obergeffreiter(or Unteroffizier) Erwin Heese(Flight Engineer) POW wounded/injured
Unit: 1 Nachtjaggeschwader 2
Place: Bin Gemma(Gozo)
Date/Time: 19 December 1941/1058-1148 hours.

One of three Ju88's it carried only incendiaries. It seems it had Italian markings.
It was their fourth sortie over Malta.
Until quite recently the aircraft's canopy and other fragments could be found in situ where it crashed.( book published in 2000).

Ju 88 C-4 0880564 R4+HH from GQM and other NJG 1 sources.
Also Shores, Cull and Malizia “Malta the Hurricane Years” P.349 to P.350 :-)

But I'm enquiring about a Ju88 claim by Hurricanes on 20 December 1941!

I'm aware on the 19 December loss.

ha ha :-) That lists are best forgotten. Seriously.

There was I/KGr 606 Ju 88 A-4 (0883587) crash at Catania that day (40 % Er)
Rather high just for undercarriage damage. No injuried reported.
I just wonder if it returned damaged from Malta raid ?
