German destroyer claimed 'floatplane' 12 July 1941

Hi guys

Off the Russian coast on 12 July 1941, the German destroyer Eckardt claimed an attacking 'floatplane' shot down.

I can't find any Russian (or German) loss to match. Any ideas? Or did the antagonist get away?

Cheers
Brian

Hello Brian,

you apparently means Eckoldt (Friedrich Eckoldt), not Eckardt.
As far as I know Eckoldt hadn't floatplane claims during the mission 12-13.Jul.41 though shelled some attacking Soviet planes incl.MBR-2 flying boats.
Please check your data.

Best regards,
Andrey

Many thanks, Andrey

My source is M.J. Whitely's "German Destroyers of WW2"

On Page 155, he states that Lody was attacked by two Russian floatplanes, and later Eckoldt by three more "and managing to shoot down one of her attackers."

Thanks for putting the record straight. Do you have Russian accounts of this attack on 12/13 July, the sortie by 6th Flotilla on 22 July, and the sortie on 9 August, when DB-3s and SB2s attacked? Or can you point me in the direction of where I can find translatable accounts on the web?

As an aside, I note that 118th RAP lost three seaplanes to German fighters on 29 June, and several more in the following months of 1941. Have you any details?

Cheers
Brian

Andrey, could this be St. Lt. Nikolay Vasilevich Tatalikhin from the 118 OMRP SF and his crew listed MIA. The OBD states it was on the 11 July 1941 that they didn't return but as of late I've found that it does not always match what is on the reports filed by the units as far as the correct date. This unit was equipped with MBR-2, GST and Che-2 aircraft.

VVS SF isn't "my" theme but:

1 GST 118.OMRAP MIA 11.Jul.41 probably due to German fighters attack during the raid of 5 GST against German artillery. Probably it was Talalikhin's crew.

Eckoldt hadn't AA claims on 12-13.Jul.41, Whitley's info is incorrect.
12.Jul. German destroyers weren't attacked from the air.
13.Jul. 2 MBR-2 and then 6 SB, 3 GST, 8 MBR-2, 3 fighters had attacked German destroyers unsuccessfully (and had reported correctly about it). No losses.

Brian, I'll try to answer your questions later.

Best regards,
Andrey

13.Jul.41: 1st take-off against destroyers was at 06:25 msk, don't know exact time of the attacks.

22.Jul.41: 4 DD were found out by 2 GST in 7024/3752 at 20:10 msk but the attack was unsuccessful due to German smoke screen and due to evasive maneuver.
23.Jul.41: 5 DD were found by air recce at 13:07 msk but the attack was unsuccessful due to the same reason.
24.Jul.41: at 05:10 2 GST, 3 SB, 9 MBR-2 and 1 Pe-2 had attacked 4 DD in 6940/3545 and has claimed a destroyer "probably sunk". 1 GST was damaged by Bf110 and crashed during the force landing, crew safe. 1 MBR-2 fell into water [probably due to the same reason], crew MIA.

10.Aug.41:
07:40 3 DD were attacked by 2 Pe-2 in 7020/3110. Crews had observed a direct hit of a FAB-250, the destroyer "had remained dead in the water in smoke".
08:20 took off 2 SB, later they has attacked unsuccessfully a destroyer sailing on low speed.

29.Jun.41:
2 GST were downed by Bf109 in the Sal'nyi island area during a recce mission.
1 MBR-2 MIA
1 MBR-2 damaged by fighters, crew had bailed out.

Andrey
