Unknown Luftwaffe Emblem in Western desert

Hi Guys.
Can anybody ID this emblem.
It was found in one of our albums that belonged to a SAAF crew member, taken while he was in Africa.
I looked at Merrick and Ketley's books on markings, but could not find anything near this.
Any help as if was a Unit's emblem or perhaps belonged to an idividual pilot??
It may have relavence to JG 77 as the other photos around it had JG 77 a/c.
Thx
Stefaan

Re: Unknown Luftwaffe Emblem in Western desert

The emblem was discussed on the good old LEMB back in early January 2010 http://www.luftwaffe-experten.org/fo...ern#entry52016 - without any particular conclusion being reached, except that the creature in all likelihood was a Wyvern.

I doubt very much that the emblem has anything much to do with JG 77 - the limited section of the aircraft panel visible on the photo in my mind does not correspond to a Bf 109 aircraft. Perhaps a Ju 87 aircraft?

Sinisa

Hi Sydney.
I tried to get into the link but failed.
I would then accept that it was not resolved. Could well have been on a Ju 87.
Thx

Hi Stefaan, one could only access the topic if they were former LEMB members. The title was... Is this 1./KuFlGr506 emblem? - It was at least established that it was not.

Hi Sinisa.
I was a member but it takes me to the group on Captured a/c and not the specific topic.
Will search under that heading thx.

Hi. Thx, got it.
Also seen in Sea Eagles Vol 1 By Chris Goss on p8 as 1./Ku.Fl.Gr 506. He has it on a He 60, which I have never seen a photo of in the desert.
The question is--- It looks very much like a badge seen on a Ju 88 in the desert
that belongs to LG 1. Did 1./Ku.Fl.Gr 506 have a link with LG 1???? They look very much the same, and both were anti-shipping/maritime patrol??
If so this badge probably came off a Ju 88 photographed by one of our SAAF guys.

Re: Unknown Luftwaffe Emblem in Western desert

Hi again,

As far as I can see it, the emblem you posted shows a Wyvern - a mythical beast with the upper part of a dragon, two legs, and a body that curves into the tail of a serpent.

The 1./Ku.Fl.Gr 506 emblem, a photo attached, on the other hand is clearly different, with another mythical beast called Griffon. I see no connection between the two.

Sinisa

Thx Sinisa.
I have no knowledge of these mythical beasts, so accept your reasoning.
Wonder off what a/c he would have removed that.
Thx
Stefaan
