Re: III/KG 27 Operations Aug-Sep 40

Chris,

I did a quick search for III./KG27 for the dates specified in the Heinrich Weiss Manuscript.

12 August 1940: nothing listed.

7 September 1940:

"Harassing attacks
Between 23.00 and 04.15 hrs 10 He 111s of III./KG27 attacked following targets in ranks of nuisance attacks:

Aircraft Target SC50 SC250 Flamm-250
1 Swansea 4 1
Plymouth 16
1 Milford Haven 8
Weymouth 4 1
Falmouth 4
Yeovilton 10
1 Liverpool 10
Gloucester 4
Cardiff 4
1 Manchester 4 1
Cheltenham 16
1 Swindon 1 1
Birmingham 7 2
1 Portland 10
Portsmouth 8
1 Bristol 16 1
1 Oxford 16
1 Manchester 6 2
1 Weymouth 4
10 Totally: 146 10 4
Weight (tons): 7,3 2,5 1,0
Total (tons) 10,8

Large-scaled attack on London
The attacks on port and industry facilities situated in target area “A” in London were also continued during the night by Luftflotte 3 and 2."

I'm not sure that III./KG27 participated in the London attacks or not.

12 September 1940:

"Luftflotte 3 Target: a)Liverpool b)London Time: 12./13.9.40

Unit Time Dispatched Bombed SC/SD50 SC/SD250 SC/SD500 SD1000 F250 B1E1

Tons of bombs 10,7 2,8 0,0 0,0 1,7 2,4
Tons dropped totally: 17,6

One He 111 of KG27 failed to return:

8./KG27 He 111P-2 1G+DS (W.Nr.2670) 100% target: Liverpool. Flew into a balloon barrage (of no.966 Balloon Sqn) over Ellesmere Port and crashed in Stow Park Avenue no.32 in Newport. The pilot was able to bail out. Two children were killed by crashing aircraft.
Olt. Harry Wappler (INJ) (FF) POW
Uffz. Fritz Berndt (HBO) KIA
Ofw. Johannes Elster (BF) KIA
Uffz. Herbert Okuneck (BM) KIA

The majority of German bombs were dropped in northern and middle part of the city as well as in harbor facilities of Mersey. Four huge detonations as well as quickly advancing fires were observed in dock area."

Regarding the London attacks you speculated about, these were conducted by "30 bombers of Air Corps IV, which included I. and II./KG27, but NOT III./KG27.

Hope this helps.

Many thanks Chris, Larry and Sven.
Really good information, I'm quite surprised that this thread as petered off like it as.
Sven do you have more information on Bogerding of 9/KG27, I have not come across this name before whilst researching KG27. Any information would be most helpful.
Best regs,
Steve.
