Fw 190 0581 crash at Venlo, 8 January 1944

Hello,

First, best wishes for this new year to all !

I would like to know the precise type of the Fw 190 WNr 0581 of Luftbeobachterstaffel 3 that crashed at Venlo on 8 January 1944. The reason of crash and fate of the pilot is given in the thread http://forum.12oclockhigh.net/showthread.php?t=14858, but I have been unable to find the type of this fighters.

Apparently a Ju 88 took off at the same time as the Fw 190. I wonder if at this stage of the war the Luftbeobachterstaffeln had received fighters to provide some king of escort fighter to their bombers? Or were fighters used also for Luftbeobachtung purposes, ie following the Allied formations and reporting their progress ?

Thanks in advance

Are you sure, Seaplanes ?

In my list the WNr. is only given as "0581" !
Another loss is the Fw 190 A-8 / 680581 with 10% damage from 20.06.44, also from FlÜG 1. Can it be the same plane ?

best wishes

Hello all,

The Fw190 flown by Lt. Wierz was an Fw190 A-4, this is known from a monthly strength report. The Fw190 was part of the Tagesschwarm of the Luftbeobachter-Staffel, shadowing USAAF forces by daylight.
The Luftbeobachter had no bombers but Ju88 R-2's.

Best wishes, Marcel

Hi guys

If indeed this was Fw 190 A-4 (W.Nr. 0140 581) then it was interestingly quite a well-known aircraft that previously served with the Gruppenstab of I./JG 1 and was flown by Leutnant Eberhard Burath.

Horrido!

Thanks to all who replied. The type is now clear for me, and the complete WNR might have been 140 581 (which was finally not lost on 30 June).

Hello all,

The added value of combining all fragmentary knowledge has again resulted in a better understanding. For me it is interesting to read that Burath has flown this Fw190 before Ludwig Wirtz had this fatal accident.

Best regards, Marcel
