P-47D-28-RA USAAF s/n 42-28461 was operated by 404th FG, 507th FS.

There is no known MACR concerning the loss of this a/c.

From my view of the loss, the incident took place in allied hold territory.

In microfilm reel A 5686 of AFHRA at page 680 the a/c's serial/# is mentioned in the respective line:

SAL NBD B 2 AIR DEPOT GP P47D 42 28461 9 24025 2402

By my understanding I read, that the a/c P-47D AAF/sn 42-28461 was salvaged non-battle-damaged status by the date of 24th February 1945. The holder of the a/c this date was 2nd Air Depot Group and not 404th FG, 507th FS. This is some kind of exceptional, since most of those lines list as a/c holder the corresponding Fighter Group.

On my opinion, this a/c made a belly-landing inside the American lines prior Feb. 24th, 1945. The a/c was photographed and snapshooted by U.S. soldiers.
Whilst not serious damage was visible, the local American leader reported the incident
to the responsible Army Air Force detachment. They handed it over to the responsible Air Depot Group, which decided, that the wreckage is in a condition to be salvaged.

Is this possible ?

42-28461 Y8-X of 507 FS, 404 FG belly-landed on 14th February (I assume due to system failure) and it was declared "Category E" (a write-off). It was therefore collected for salvage by 2nd Air Depot to begin the process of converting it into ingots of aluminium. The term "salvaged" in the AAF equates to "struck off charge" in the RAF.

Horst, or others,

Can you tell me if the microfilm A5686 records just the losses of 8th and 9th Air Forces, or does it also cover 12th and 15th Air Forces in the Mediterranean?

Peglar ,
I looked around some more after the email I sent. Sherman N Crocker flew a 'Peggy' but codes were Y8*V .
He flew a Razorback but not sure if he flew this 'Peggy'.
Y8*V 225707 was the Razorback's serial number which I got from the 404th FG web sight 'Built Only For Battle' by John Levesley.
It also states a pilot Phelps flew it also.
Need to dig out my Leap Off book on the 404th FG to see if I can find more.
