Re: Was there an italian Hurricane??
I believe the ex-Yugoslavian Hurricane had fabric covered wings.

Re: Was there an italian Hurricane??
It is ex-Yugoslav and due to some search it had metal covered wings. How to place picture here?

Re: Was there an italian Hurricane??
I belive the Zamaj may have been fabric wing.
Note the placement of the landing light. It was further outboard of the guns on a metal wing. Top pic is metal, bottom is a Zamaj built, captured by the Italians http://forum.12oclockhigh.net/attach...1&d=1143901099 http://forum.12oclockhigh.net/attach...1&d=1143901099 |
Re: Was there an italian Hurricane??
Hi guys
The picture of the captured RAF Hurricane in the hangar was taken in Sicily. It was Z2491/HA-D of 126 Squadron from Malta which had been brought down while strafing Comiso airfield on 24 November 1941, Flt Sgt W.D. Greenhalgh was captured unhurt. Another Hurricane captured by the Italians in much better conditon was V7716/TP-U of 73 Squadron that force-landed outside Tobruk during a sandstorn on 12 April 1941. The pilot Flt Lt G.E. Ball DFC, who had flown with Bader during the Battle of Britain, was also captured. I assume the Hurricane was later flown by the Italians in Italian markings - perhaps others can confirm this. There is a nice picture of V7716 in 'Hurricanes over Tobruk', which was sent to me by TOCH member Gianandrea Bussi. Cheers Brian |
Re: Was there an italian Hurricane??
You can see A Zamaj built Hurricane under italian camouflage and english roundels in the film of Roberto Rossellini :"Un pilota retorna" (1942).You can see also a Bristol Blenheim (not flying), plus wonderful views of CANT Z1007bis in flight (50° BTV, 161 sqla.).

Story about Italian Hurricane is known since 2001/03
Hi
The color drawings and some photos printed on some web side comming from my story, which is exactly about this topics. She was printed by G. Apostolo in his Italian magazine as: Gli Hurricane Italiani / Italian Hurricanes, p. 13, 21 b&w, 2 color sites Hurricane-Zmaj BR.2337 in RA markings, about 20.000 signes, [in:] Aerofan Storia di Ali Italiane, Apr.-Giu. 2003 N.85. Text is 100% Italian-English. This is extended, corrected version taken from one chapter of my book about Hurricanes in Foreign Service. Hurricane in Foreign Service (Belgium, Finland, Yugoslavia, Germany, Italy, Rumania, Soviet Union). Hurricane w obcej służbie (Belgia, Finlandia, Jugosławia, Niemcy, Włochy, Rumunia, ZSRR), p. 72, ISBN 83-9114521-0-7, 120 b&w, 37 color sides, Ajaks, Warszawa 2001. So far, I have not yet found any more detailed information about this particular subject. All the best Mirek Wawrzyński, an author of both printed material, :-) |
