Upside Down Hurricane
This is a picture of an upside down Hurricane I in a town. The only information is that it is in "Guernsey". Any ideas?

Re: Upside Down Hurricane
Humm, no sign of the Hurricane in this list? I think the caption on the picture was wrong. No surprise.
BTW, thanks for the link: It curiously omits one other Channel Island A/C casualty: an elderly P47C-5, s/n 41-6358, of the 405th FG that belly landed on June 23,1944. The pilot, Lt. Walter R. Davis was taken POW. There was a picture of this airplane in the ATB issue on the Channel Islands. In the book "the German Occupation of Guernsey"[L.P. Sinel], the incident is described: June 23..."During the morning, an American single-seater fighter came down at St. Ouen 's owing to lack of petrol; the pilot was arrested and the plane put under guard" Furthermore, "November 30:...a boat arrived in St. Heliers's Harbour today-from St. Aubins!- and discharged a single-seater American plane which came down some months ago and was to have been shipped to France." |
Re: Upside Down Hurricane
kaki, there is one Hurricane.
On 11/12 April 1941, a Hawker Hurricane on a night intruder operation ran out of fuel, the pilot bailed out and landed on Lihou Guernsey and became a prisoner of war. |
Re: Upside Down Hurricane
It isn't a Hurricane. The undercarriage looks familiar, but the belly is completely different. Nor did the Hurricane have a six-spoke wheel. Could it be an MS406? I'm not sure of the belly details for the type. Other hints are an underwing roundel that would be French, and white marks on the wing that appear to be the four character French identity markings.

Re: Upside Down Hurricane
Yes It is a MS 406 with "matricule militaire" which begins by N following by unknown number of three characters.

Re: Upside Down Hurricane
Ok, my error. I guessed by looking at the wheel that it was a Hurricane.

Re: Upside Down Hurricane
Still, if it is in Jersey or C/Islands there must be a record somewhere? Was it fleeing to the UK at the time?
