I'm having trouble finding any biographical info on this guy. All I know is that he was Wilhelm Schilling's wingman at JG 54 and spent six years in Soviet captivity. Any help appreciated.

Assuming he was enlisted (other ranks) and you cannot find someone who has already researched H-V.v.O., here are two sources:
1) his Karteikarten cards at BA-MA Freiburg;
2) his very long and very detailed interrogation report conducted on all UdSSR returnees at the EUCOM Joint Intelligence Center in Nürnberg by the CIA, BND and the CIC, copies of which can be found at NARA WashDC.

He was born on 6th October 1924, and died on 10th October 1999. Seems that the day he was shot down he claimed an Il-2 at 1210 hrs 100 metres altitude with 5./JG 54, but was then shot down by a Lavochvin-5, he bailed-out of his flaming Fw190 over Viipuri, Finland, and captured three days later. Released from captivity Christmas 1949.
