Dornier 17 U5+CM 4/KG2 22nd November 1940
 

Hi all,

I am looking for any information or photographs of the following aircraft which was lost on 22nd November 1940.
It was attacked by three hurricanes of 253 Squadron and crashed at Tarring Neville near Newhaven.
Thanks in advance for any information that you can offer.

4./KG2 Dornier Do17Z-1 (3272). Shot down by F/L R.M.B. Duke-Wooley, P/O G. Marsland, and P/O A.F. Eckford of No.253 Squadron during sortie to London and crashed on downland at Tarring Neville, north-east of South Heighton, near Newhaven, 12.20 p.m. FF Fw Wilhelm Pleitz, BO Uffz Karl Treffert, and BM Fw Gustav Otterbeck all killed, BF Uffz Gerhard Weinhold missing. Aircraft U5+CM 100% write-off.
The wreckage exploded soon after the crash and no trace of Gerhard Weinhold was ever found - he has no known grave.

I have Uffz. Gerhard Weinhold (Bf), Born: 16.02.1916 at Neusalz/Freystadt, EM: 58213/84, captured.

Details you provided for WEINHOLD are correct but he was not captured. This crew were all killed as previously stated.

Peter, Information from the Book: The Blitz Then and Now (Volume 2), p290 states:
Uffz. G. Weinhold baled out and was taken prisoner.

Your source is understood, nevertheless, the information in The Blitz Then and Now (Vol.2) p290 is wrong in respect of WEINHOLD.
