Uffz Heinzich Lang 8/ZG1 lost 11.05.1944
 

Hello,

this pilot, with other crew Gefr. Hubert Licht and Ogefr Werner Drewes, was lost in Mediterranean Sea while escorting torpedo bombers of KG26 and KG 77 operating against an allied convoy on 11 may 1944.

Can someone give me references (WNr and code) of the plane ?

Hello Chris,

I have your book "Bloody Biscay", but following a recent move, I can not find him back ; I think it must be in one of the unopened boxes that are still in the cellar. A little work of handling and classification to do. In any case, many thanks to you.

In "Bloody Biscay", Chris Goss indicates that Lang and his crew were all missing. But, in "The Sting of the Luftwaffe", John Vasco tells "Uffz Lang rescued and returned to unit", rest of the crew missing. Which solution is the good one ?

Very difficult to believe that Uffz Lang was rescued and returned to unit. Obviously he was in the 1950's still missing because his photo was published in the "Deutsches Rotes Kreuz Suchdienst Vermisstenbildliste" on page 500 with a note that the last message from him was im May 1945.

The information in the loss/damage tables in my 'Sting of the Luftwaffe' came from two primary sources:
1. Namentliche Verlustmeldungen for ZG 1, of which I had a complete set; and
2. Quartermaster's Returns, which microfilm rolls I studied at the IWM.

I would not have entered into the book that Uffz. Heinrich Lang had been rescued and returned to his unit unless one of the above mentioned sources said so.

There is a photo of Lang's Beobachter, Gefr. Hubert Licht, on page 117 of 'Sting of the Luftwaffe'.
