Soviet Hurricane crash circa December 1942
Hi guys
A Soviet Hurricane was shot down by an American cargo vessel circa December 1942, when it overflew the ship at low level whilst at anchor in Murmansk/Arkangelsk (according to the SBNO at Murmansk) Apparently it was the second or third Soviet aircraft to have fallen to the ships' gunfire in this period. Any information would be most welcomed. Thanks Brian |
Re: Soviet Hurricane crash circa December 1942
Why would an American ship, moored in the USSR, shot down not one, but several Soviet aircraft?

Re: Soviet Hurricane crash circa December 1942
Ships' gunners shoot at everything that flies near, a regrettable truth demonstrated time and again, not least on the Arctic convoys escorted by a carrier. In their defence, Murmansk was open to attack by German aircraft so cannot be regarded as a safe anchorage.
