My comment is the white or yellow tail appears to be a replacement since it bears no camouflage.

It's white and designates a Kommodore or Kommandeur, a marking introduced for Reich defence units in February 1944. See: http://www.ghostbombers.com/markings/bands1.html

Photographic evidence does show white tailed Staffelkapitän and Gruppenkommandeur machines since Summer 1943 as evidenced here:

Thanks. I suspect that many of the orders issued about markings were just to standardise something that was already being done.
