Absprungplatz ?
 

Hi guys

I was successful with my previous enquiry, so what does Absprungplatz mean?

Is it a satellite airstrip?

it means advanced landing ground.

...or Forward Landing Ground. An aircraft would fly to this from home base for an operational flight.

A literal translation - "jumping-off place" - conveys the purpose quite well, too.

During the Battle of Britain perhaps a good example would be the I./JG 53 home base at Rennes (26 June - 28 August 1940) and the Gruppe's Absprungplatz at Villiaze on Guernsey (July - 24 August 1940). The Google Maps will illustrate the respective distances from the British Isles.

Of interest, I/JG 53 very rarely used Guernsey in such way but used Cherbourg-Ost. Hans Ohly's FB makes just one mention of operating for a recce of the airfield at Jersey on 4 Aug 40 and then used Guernsey for the 8 Aug (mission called off) and again 9 Aug 40 (mission called off)

Chris, please note that the reference to Guernsey as the Absprungplatz was found in Prien, Stemmer and others JFV 4/II, no mention of Cherbourg-Ost in this respect there. I trust that your information is more up to date, thank you.
