New ? photo of a late war 19

Bonjour,

A new photo (for me) of a late war 109 :

Rémi,

This machine is highly interesting: this is the third pic known: here are the other two ones:

We are looking here at a very finely mottled Bf 109 G-6/AS "Rote 5". This camouflage type was sported by II./JG 51 machines, but they sported their II. Gruppe bar in front of the tactical number. Anders Hjortsberg suggests rather 6./JG 11 as this unit was known for having original camouflage patterns as well.

This might make sense for the unit, but then comes the issue of the location: the card shown by the seller states Pau, the former Stab and I./JG 101 base close to the Western Pyrénées, a place where no fighting units were ever stationed...

As the picture you found is sold among a batch of RCAF 401 Sqn pictures in Normandy, and that the military personnel seen on all pictures do wear RAF type fatigues, there is a fair chance that this Bf 109 was actually found by 401 RCAF personal...in Normandy. This would fit well with the known bases of II./JG 11...No certitude though

Cheers

....
II./JG11 didn't get its first G-6/AS before 9/44 according Holm site.... When 401RCAF was already away.

Regards, Franck.

PS: I almost forgot; Thanks Rémi!

So which possible unit then, Franck ?

No clues so far, at least on my side...

Cheers

I have no clue either Marc. I just wrote it's hard with II./JG 11.
From the two best writers I did contact last year ... No positive answer.

Hoping for a breakthrough, especially also pinpointing the location...

Franck,

I think you will find that II./JG 11 received its first G-6/AS much earlier than September 1944 - just look at the well known and widely published a/c of Maj. Specht takein in April 1944 or the other G-6/AS shown in our JG 1/11 history, all photographed well before September.

A remark:

the background looks like Normandy (trees, flat zone,..), much more than Pau area

Jochen,

Thank you for your comment, I'm going to change this in my mind and in my data.
Do you think it's a possible II./JG11 machine? :)

Regards, Franck.
