Loss of P-38 H 42-67064
 

Good Evening,

I have this P38 H 42-67064 as a loss on 29-11-43 on a mission to Bremen .
Nevertheless in the SGLO [Dutch loss register i can,t find this one].
The plane was lost in the Emmen area .
My question is this loss correct ? On the internet i can,t find not much.
My source is a map of Emmen of a old researcher ,so i don,t know how reliable this is.

Can you check your serial-number ?. This a/c was not lost in the USAAF registers. Probably a numerical confusion.

That day seven P-38 were lost. One with the s/n 42-67046 near Oldenburg.

I have 42-67020 as going down near Oldenburg but 42-67046 going down at Handschoote. Seems like a mix up of data somewhere down the line!

P-38H-5-LO 42-67069 was assigned to the 55FG/338FS at Nuthampstead, UK. On 29-Nov-43 the aircraft, piloted by 2nd Lt Fleming William Suiter, was dispatched with other P-38s from 55th FG to provide escort to bombers attacking at Bremen, Germany. When the flight was near Emmen, Holland they were attacked by about 30 German fighters. 2nd Lt Suiter attempted to escape from the attack by entering a cloud bank but his aircraft was shot down. He managed to bale out of the stricken aircraft and was captured as a Prisoner of War. The aircraft crashed at Mepple, Holland. 1 POW, MACR 1273.

MACR1428 P-38H-5-LO 42-67051 55FG/38FS shot down in air combat at Hoogeveen, Netherlands on 29 November 1943. 2Lt Albert A. Albino KIA See SGLO T3134
MACR1431 P-38H-5-LO 42-67090 55FG/38FS shot down in air combat at Zwartewatersklooster, Netherlands on 29 November 1943. 2Lt John J. Carroll POW See SGLO T3135

However, it is unclear what happened to the CO of 38FS and his wingman:
MACR1429 P-38H-5-LO 42-67020 55FG/38FS missing after air combat west of Oldenburg, Germany on 29 November 1943. Maj Milton Joel MIA. According to SGLO T3133 his aircraft crashed into the IJsselmeer.
MACR1427 P-38H-5-LO 42-67046 55FG/38FS missing after air combat west of Oldenburg, Germany on 29 November 1943. 1Lt James M. Garvin KIA. Where did this aircraft crash? Online sources report several different places in Germany, Netherlands or France. The body of the pilot was repatriated to Iowa in 1949.

Acc. to "Double Nickel - Double Trouble" by R.M. Littlefield pag. 27, 2/Lt James M. Garvin was reported down near the Loda Canal, Holland.
But the location of this canal in the Netherlands is unknown to me.

There is a canal/stream called Leda just SE of Leer in N. Germany.
